Pay-per-click (PPC) is an Internet advertising model used to drive traffic to websites. In the PPC model, advertisers run ads on a platform such as Google Ads or Microsoft Advertising (formerly Bing Ads) and the advertiser pays the advertising platform when the ad is clicked.
In the search engine PPC model, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market and pay when ads are clicked. The ads are can be text ads or shopping ads that are comprised of both images and text.
Search engines are the most popular way that people look for products and services. Search engine PPC offers a great opportunity for advertisers to reach their target audience. Search engine PPC covers a number of different ad platforms. The most common of these being Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising (formerly Bing Ads). The advertiser will set the maximum bid (cost you are willing to pay for each click) and your ad goes into an auction with other advertisers who are bidding on the same keywords.

Google Ads is the most popular PPC platform. It was recently reported that in the US, Google’s Ad market share is over 80%.
Microsoft Advertising: Microsoft Advertising (formerly Bing Ads), is similar to Google Ads and you can run ads on Bing, Yahoo and AOL. Running Ads on Microsoft Advertising is similar to Google Ads from an administrative standpoint. . It was recently reported that in the US, Microsoft’s Ad(Bing and Yahoo) market share is over 10%. Although Microsoft Advertising has a lower volume than Google Ads, it is often cited as providing a better ROI(Return on Investment).
Other Ad Networks: There are other PPC networks such as: Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads, Twitter Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Amazon Ads, BuySellAds, Bidvertiser, AdBlade, AdRecover, RevContent, AdRoll, Advertise.com, etc. We will cover some of these in a little more detail in another article focused on Social Media Marketing.
